Description
The Tipa Dungarees pattern has been designed for the fit and comfort of women, featuring shaped hips, front and back darts and room for a puku (tummy).
It has a relaxed and simple style and can be worn with layered clothing underneath.
Play around with fabric drapes to create your desired look. Choose light weight cottons and linens to create a loose bohemian style, or choose stable fabrics like drill or canvas for a traditional structured dungaree.
Variations include front and back hip patch pockets, front bib pocket, along with your choice of short or long trouser leg length and turned up cuff for the shorts.
Tipa is the Māori name for a scallop. Its shell has a flat top and a rounded bottom, much like our dungaree silhouette.

Fabric Suggestions:
Look for light to heavy weight fabrics that can be easily pressed to create nice edges.
Main Fabric: Light – heavy weight cotton, chambray, denim, linen, sateen, drill / twill etc.
Lining Fabric: Light weight cotton, poly cotton etc.
Optional: Small piece of iron on interfacing for button / dungaree button placement, recommended for light weight fabric.
Fit and Ease of the Dungarees:
The Tipa Dungarees have been created to shape through the hips and tummy with plenty of ease for comfort and underneath layers.
When you are choosing what size to create, measure around the hips (the fullest part of hip). Use the hip measurement to determine what size you are in this pattern.
This pattern has been created using Standard American Measurements and might seem different to what you usually buy in stores. Therefore, use the size the chart says you are to fit the hips, and if required, lengthen or shorten the dungarees as needed.
Since there is shaping through the hip we have also included the “finished high hip” measurement – this is to guide you in feeling confident the sizing will fit you through the hips.
Create a toile: We recommend using the front, back and strap pattern pieces with spare fabric to create a toile first as this pattern fits from your shoulder to ankle, there are variations between human proportions within these measurements.
Fabric and Fit Chart:
Additional Notions Required:
- 0.75m (1yd) light weight lining fabric
- Small piece of iron on interfacing, similar weight to chosen fabric if using light weight fabric or dungaree clips.
- 2 x medium buttons (approximately 2.5cm / 1” in width) (or alternatives like snaps, velcro, dungaree clips (35mm (1 3/8″) / 38mm* (1 1/2*)) (*preferred, depending on what is available to you)
-
Invisible zipper: Size 6-14: 25cm (9 7/8”), Size 16 -24: 30cm (12”)

Absolutely stoked to have made my first ever dungarees. I’ve been meaning to make one and I’m so glad I was able to make the Tipa! Love the easy instructions! Thanks for another great pattern!

What a fantastic pattern! So easy to follow, so easy to sew and so easy to wear! Added bonus – perfect for discrete breast feeding 🙌 I’ve already made the Tipa skirt hack and it’s part of my winter wardrobe rotation. Another one knocked out of the park – thanks Sophie!

What a joy to find sewing this womens pattern is as fun as sewing the kids version. Well designed pattern, clear instructions and a great fit made this an easy way to dive into sewing for myself again. I made the trouser version in a heavy weight linen.

Another amazing BTK pattern. Easy and quick to sew, great resources to help you through that tricky zipper and make you feel like a pro!

Love this pattern! I’m a huge fan of the child Tipa dungarees, so the adult version didn’t disappoint. Another amazing BTK pattern with helpful, clear instructions and excellent guidance along the way.

The adult Tipa is a really enjoyable sew. I learned how to insert an invisible zip (great instructions included to help!). Like all BTK patterns these have a very professional looking finish. I made mine in linen with knotted straps and I’m waiting for the perfect green cord for my next trouser pair. It’s a perfect pattern for those learning to sew for themselves. Can’t wait to twin with my kids sometime too!

Dungarees for us too!!! I have loved the Tipa dungarees for my girls ever since testing and the release, but now I am over the moon to have the most comfortable dungarees for ME!!! The back strap shape, great pockets, the choice to knot the straps, add buttons or dungarees clips are all fantastic options and I love both my shorts and long pair!! Can’t wait to make a cooler weather pair too in cord 🙂 Sophie’s tutorial is as amazing as ever, and check out the video tutorial too for more visual help!!

Love this pattern! It’s as easy to follow and as beautiful a finish as the kids Tipa which I’ve loved making since it’s release. Beautiful fit on the dungarees, with clear and easy options for adjustments to get it just right.
I used cord for winter, and have plans for some linen as it drapes beautifully with this pattern, and some heavier weight for the dog park visits.

I absolutely loved sewing up a pair of Tipa Dungarees just for me! The pattern was so well put together and easy to understand, such a lovely sew.

Like all of Sophie’s patterns, this has clear step-by- step directions to help you create a professional garment. These dungarees are very flattering and comfortable to wear. I can’t wait to make a shorts version as well. And I always appreciate how the inside of the clothing looks just as nice as the outside.
For those who use projectors, these are the best projector files I have ever seen. Clear lines, big margins, and it even includes a layer with lines you can use to help adjust length.

I’m a relative beginner and the instructions and pattern were so well explained, with pictures, I ended up with dungarees that I’m really proud of and love wearing. Now all my family members want some too!

I have made two Adult Tipa dungarees now – summer linen shorts and some longer pincord ones. The pattern is easy to follow and guides you through darts and zips. I have worn mine a lot and get comments all the time – definitely a winner pattern!
