Sewing Level:

The BellBird Dress has been designed with beginners in mind – Can you sew in a straight line and find the zig zag stitch on your machine? Then this is for you!

You’ll love the enclosed seams in the bodice, the easy button and loop closure (no button holes or zips!). The instructions for the pockets are detailed in each step along with photos. If pockets make you nervous, give them a go and enjoy your finished results!

The more advanced will appreciate the option to gain some new skills and have fun with the embroidery tutorial and pattern!

Fabric Suggestions:

For summer think: Cottons, voile, lawn, linen and linen blends, chambray and light denims (there are so many great denims available now!), and anything similar that catches your eye!

For winter think: Quilting or upholstery weight cottons, corduroy, velvet, drill, and anything similar that catches your eye!

Fit and Ease of The BellBird Dress:

The BellBird Dress has been created for playing in so there is plenty of ease already included in the pattern. Its been designed for a loose fit (enough for a top underneath it for winter), and we think you’ll love the bell sleeves that gather at the wrist.

When you are choosing what size to create, measure around the chest (tape measure tucked underneath the underarm). Use the chest measurement to determine what size your child is.

This pattern has been created using Standard American Measurements and might seem different to what you usually buy in stores. Therefore, use the size the chart says you are to fit the chest, and if required, lengthen or shorten the skirt as needed.

Fabric and Fit Chart:
Additional Notions Required:
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Elastic 1-1.5cm in width (length supplied in chart) for sleeves
  • Thin elastic (rolled or flat) for button loop. 5cm / 2 inches.
  • Safety Pin (for threading elastic)
  • 1x medium sized button

A lovely timeless pattern, modernised with the addition of pockets. I love how this pattern is versatile to suit your style and a great pattern to have in your collection….I am already imagining many different combinations to make!

Such a sweetly styled dress and LOVED the addition of pockets. If I can make this pattern as a complete beginner, then anyone can! The pattern and tutorial were straight forward and easy to follow with the addition of many extra tips and photo prompts. Thanks Sophie for a great project to launch me into sewing, I’m so pleased with the result! 🙂

This pattern is easy to follow, and the final product is just stunning. The embroidery and pockets are a lovely touch as well. This has quickly become my daughter’s favourite dress. I sewed the sleeved version for winter, but I’ll definitely sew up another one without sleeves for summer.

I loved sewing this!! Instructions were easy to follow with lovely photos to help guide me along. I made a sleeveless version & fell in love with the no zip or buttonhole opening at the back. My daughter loves wearing the 2 I have made her so far!!!

I’ve recently completed my second BellBird dress (the first time I sewed a sleeveless size 1, and this time a size 6.) I love the classic beauty of the design and was impressed with the easy to follow instructions. The fit is spot on too. I also really enjoyed the added bonus of the optional embroidery, and found the instructions and pictures so helpful for that too! Thanks for making such a lovely pattern.

Such a beautiful and easy pattern. I am a beginner sewer and it was all so easy to follow. Thoroughly enjoyed creating the Bellbird dress for my daughter and will for years to come.

Thank you so much for making such a great pattern! I am a pretty simple sewer and this pattern was awesome! The dress turned out great and I’m so proud of it! Thank you again!

I wasn’t going to buy this pattern, I told myself we didn’t need it … but so glad I did because it is just beautiful, even with my sewing (lol) and using checked cotton flannel it is so gorgeous and drapey and perfect for winter and I am totally going to make a few for summer as well. The embroidery is extra lovely as well, such a rewarding thing to have made and even though I hadn’t embroidered since childhood I now want to embroider all the things. Thank you for your amazing patterns!

A fun sew with some techniques I hadn’t used before (lined bodice! Such a lovely finish).
The sleeves and relaxed fit make it feel so whimsical and sweet!

  10. Melissa Kelly (verified owner)

A very pretty dress and easy to make. I would like to see the pattern updated to allow for layers / specific sizes to be selected when printing.
I also wasn’t a fan of the raw edges left on the lining and how the lining wasn’t attached to the dress everywhere – I would either change the construction of the bodice or sew the lining to the skirt and finish with bias tape for a cleaner finish.

First attempt at the Bellbird Dress. Love it and learning from mistakes 🤪 Wondered why the back bodice wasn’t working quite right then realised i cut the front and back on the fold. The sleeveless version wasnt meant to be sleeveless either but love the result.

I recently used the Bellbird to make a sister set of 3 dresses for our family photos. They were perfect.!!!. I love the drapey sleeves and the perfect bodice fit. I find it a little too short for my tall girls, Fine for summer, but I like to add a little extra length for winter.

  13. Juulsoofhandmade (verified owner)

Just made my first BellBird dress and I’m in love.
It’s looks so beautifull and comfortable and my little girl didn’t want to take it off. My oldest already requested a tunic length BellBird.
As expected of BTK the pattern is very well drafted and the tutorial is perfect and easy to follow. Love the extra embroidery pattern and tutorial that’s included.
