Sewing Level:

The Tui Pinafore has been designed with beginners in mind – Can you sew in a straight line and find the zig zag stitch on your machine? Then this is for you!

You’ll love the look of the clean seam lines, and the instructions for the pockets are detailed in each step along with photos. If pockets make you nervous, give them a go and enjoy your finished results!

The more advanced will appreciate the finishing touches, the enclosed waist band seams and the versatility of The Tui Pinafore.

Fabric Suggestions:

As the waist band is enclosed (and you don’t want it to be too bulky), look for light to medium weight fabrics that can be easily pressed to create nice edges.

For summer think: Cottons, voile, lawn, linen and linen blends, chambray and light denims (there are so many great denims available now!), and anything similar that catches your eye!

For winter think: Quilting or upholstery weight cottons, corduroy, velvet, drill, and anything similar that catches your eye!

Fit and Ease of Pinafore:

The Tui Pinafore has been created to sit on the waist with a nice flat waist band, and with the elasticated back this is easy to fit the child. You’ll find your Tui will grow with the child.

When you are choosing what size to create, measure around the waist (the narrowest part of the torso). Use the waist measurement to determine what size your child is.

This pattern has been created using Standard American Measurements and might seem different to what you usually buy in stores. Therefore, use the size the chart says you are to fit the waist, and if required, lengthen or shorten the skirt as needed.

Fabric and Fit Chart:

Additional Notions Required:
  • Thread
  • Scissors
  • Elastic 2-3.2cm in width. Length supplied in chart.
  • Safety Pin (for threading elastic)

A beautiful classic design with just enough challenge for an adventurous beginner sewer to enhance their sewing skills with the aid of detailed pictures and instructions. I love that all seams are neatly enclosed and the embroidery pattern is gorgeous!

My first time using interfacing! I have always steered clear from anything I don’t know, but this tutorial helped me step out and learn something new. End product is super cute!

As a beginner I found this pattern great due to its options to simplify- no curved straps or patch pocket, and as I gain confidence I will be able to revisit it. Great that it comes in a wide size range so it will grow with my girl. Lovely classic piece, very practical. Mostly I think I appreciated the Facebook Live tutorials as its easier to see things being done before attempting them and getting extra tips. I’ll definitely be making this again and again. Thanks so much!

A really fun and satisfying sew, I can’t wait to make more with with different variations including the embroidered pocket. A classically styled garment that is neatly and professionally finished, yet quick and easy to sew up!

Easy pattern to download and print. Great seam allowances included. Actually found it a little challenging but I think that is because I am used to using shop bought sewing patterns – Ive sewed for 40+ years so having the instructions presented in a different manner took a little bit longer for me to interperate them. Found the back opening a bit tricky when joining the skirt – didn’t help that I had a fabric that was light and frayed lots. BUT overall the little dress is now finished and hanging waiting for my two year old grand daughter to try on. Keen to try the little skirt pattern.
